Communication is more than words

Well rested after the last night’s cultural activities the participants were excited to start a new day. Although, the Cyprus weather was suggesting to spend the day at the beach, the participants were eager to explore the different communication styles. After doing a small test that more or less gave and described their most used style, the participants, with the help of the trainer, then completed several interesting activities exploring all four communication styles. In pairs, they had to talk about themselves in their native language to another participant that had no knowledge of the spoken language. Creating an amusing atmosphere, the participants observed each other’s posture, intonation and hand gestures as the styles of the person sharing the story switched.

After lunch, the participants were invited to some cake and to celebrate DOREA Educational Institute 5 years’ birthday. Following the chitchats, the training continued. Participants had to share a short story about themselves, and their life as a trainer. At the end of the training day the participants formed groups to create a poster for a fictional photography workshop to learn to use and combine all four styles of communication to promote the workshop practicing how to include information, prepare an effective headline and how they should attract people to the event with the help of the 4 styles. Sharing the final work the participants had to explain how they used the communications styles and discussed which elements attracted the most attention.

Diversity for an orange. Day 2

As the second day of the training started the participants were definitely more comfortable among each other. The day was filled with challenging group exercises of communication. Why challenging? The participants had the task to exchange a simple, local orange for something more valuable. And as it appears there are great communicators (and “dealers”) among the participants. The groups came back with wine bottles, a flower pot, stuffed teddy bear, gum, candles and more. The participants had fun walking around the streets of Limassol presenting their task to the locals and getting different reactions – not all exchanges were successful, as few requests were denied. But the participants did not give up and came back with promising results.

In the evening the participants had the chance to celebrate the diversity in the Intercultural evening. Each country’s participants had their own table to represent their culture with stories, food, videos, dances and great experiences. The presentations lasted for several hours with variations of some traditional dances and non-formal chats outside the training time. After all the country representatives had a chance to promote their country and organization the rest of the evening was free for further bonding and making lasting memories.

After being welcomed by the DOREA Team and the trainer Panagiotis Mamouzakis the participants got to know each other by interacting in interesting activities.  Exploiting the room, the participants exchanged their names and even took it up a notch when they had to share information about themselves without talking – some did acrobatic tricks and some shook hands, shared emotional hugs. After forming groups for upcoming training days, the warm Cyprus weather lured the participants outside to the terrace to discuss and share their stories and interests as a first group activity.
